How IVF with donor sperm works
IVF with donor sperm follows the same core process as standard IVF, with donor sperm used to fertilise your eggs, either conventionally or, where recommended, using ICSI (a single sperm injected directly into the egg).
- Ovarian stimulation, monitored by scan and blood tests
- A short egg collection procedure under sedation
- Fertilisation with screened donor sperm in the lab (ICSI if recommended)
- Embryo transfer, with suitable additional embryos frozen where possible

Eggs are collected and fertilised with donor sperm in the lab before an embryo is transferred.
- Donor sperm is not included in the treatment price and costs approximately £1,500 extra.
- Generally offers a higher chance of success per cycle
- Allows embryos to be assessed before transfer, and any spare embryos frozen
- Often recommended where IUI is unlikely to be effective

Should I have IUI or IVF with donor sperm?
It depends on your age, fertility history and any test results, so this isn’t decided in advance. As a general guide, IUI can be a reasonable starting point for some patients, while IVF is often recommended where it offers a better chance of success in fewer cycles. Your specialist will explain the reasoning behind their recommendation for you specifically.
Am I suitable for treatment with donor sperm?
Most single women and female couples are suitable for donor sperm treatment, subject to standard fertility assessment and screening. Suitability is confirmed by our clinical team after reviewing your history and test results, not assumed from this page.
What checks and tests will I need before treatment?
